How to Prepare a Vinegar Rinse for Pysanky

When starting your pysanky journey, it's essential to prepare your eggshell correctly for the dyeing process. One way to do this is by using a vinegar rinse, which effectively removes any oils and residual chemicals from the eggshell, ensuring a clean surface for the dye.

To create your vinegar rinse, combine equal parts of 5% white vinegar and water - typically, 125 mL (1/2 cup) of each will suffice. Once mixed, this solution is ready for use. You can also use 10% cleaning vinegar for this process.

Submerge the egg entirely in the vinegar solution, ensuring that all parts of the eggshell come into contact with the rinse. After approximately 30 seconds, remove the egg from the solution, and gently pat it dry with a paper towel.

While this can technically be done before drawing your initial wax lines, it is recommended to use the vinegar rinse after applying your first wax lines and before immersing your egg in its first dye bath. This way, the vinegar rinse not only preps the eggshell for dye but also removes any oils from your fingers that may have transferred during the waxing process, ensuring a clean, ready-to-dye eggshell.

By following these steps, your pysanky eggs will have the perfect canvas for your artistic expression, helping to preserve this beautiful Ukrainian tradition for generations to come. #pysankylove #ukrainiantraditions #pysankyforever #ukrainianheritage #pysanky
